What Would You Say?

Mark 8:34-35 “And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.”

This three-day week at school was incredibly memorable. It was a fast and very busy week, however I was amazed at the number of “stop and reflect” times I had both alone and with my students.

The Great Teacher

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.” Luke 6:40

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26

In a mere six months of teaching, I have realized this: When you learn from the great Teacher on a daily basis, and you surrender your own plans, ideas, or ways of teaching to Him, there is little stress associated with the “job”.

From day one, I prayed, “God, if you want me to do this, please give me what I need each day. Show me how to be a teacher, because I don’t feel like I can do it.”

The Atypical, Thrilling Adventure of a College Athlete

Philippians 3:13-14 “Brothers I do not consider that I have made it my own.  But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

“College will be the best four years of your life!” is a phrase I heard numerous times during my senior year of high school and into the summer before I started college. I was eager for a new start, but little did I know that my four “planned” years would turn into a five year, atypical journey to graduation and life ahead.

The Dream I’ll Never Forget

Isaiah 41:10 “…I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Imagine the happiest moment in your life. Think about that complete joy that no one can take away. This moment might be as quick as a few seconds, or it may be a long-lasting bliss. This moment, however long it may be, is vivid. The moment is seared into your mind and imprinted on your heart forever. Think about that moment-that moment you don’t ever want to forget.

The Musical Transformation

Psalm 108:1 “My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul.”

This story was written as a gift to one of the greatest teachers I have ever had-one who not only taught me the language and theory of music, but also taught me patience and endurance. This descriptive essay was written in 2006 to encompass a span of thirteen years and one of the greatest spans of learning in my life.
