Psalm 90:14 “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”
One of the things I have been learning this past year is what it means to slow down. Not just for a moment, but to slow down my entire lifestyle. This has been a long and slow (no pun intended) process for me, but it has been good.
I was on the go for years—all the way back to high school. Sports, classes, social life, church activities, and work. It consumed my life, and it was exhausting. It got to the point where I didn’t feel that I had enough time to spend daily time with Jesus because I was just too busy—yikes. I realized it shortly after I became pregnant two years ago. I had to slow down. I had to take care of myself—spiritually, mentally, and physically. Although I knew my life was not my own, carrying a baby was a reminder that I really needed to stop this craziness.
Life changed in 2018 when my son was born. It changed my pace of life, and even though there was a new “busy” of parenting, life drastically slowed down.
I wasn’t working eighty hours a week. I wasn’t filling my schedule to the point of exhaustion. Rocking a baby for hours slowed me down. Being at home for a few months allowed me to have quality time with my family. Feeling totally lost with this change of pace forced me to Jesus not just daily, but hourly—all day and all night for many months.
Life is slower now at age 32 than it has ever been for me. Is it weird some days? Yes. Is it worth it? Definitely. I’ve only ever been “too busy” because that is what I chose. It seems so simple to say no to the worldly demands so that we have more time for Jesus, but it is difficult when society demands the opposite.
This morning after my husband and I read our devotional together, I sat with my little boy and enjoyed some coffee (he liked banging the spoon on the side of the mug). As I drove to sub at CCS, I thanked God for the time we had together, that I could go do something I loved, and look forward to an evening of no plans except to rest.
Slow is good. Try it-it might change your life.
